Clean Your Ducts And Registers For Maximum Airflow

Posted on

There are many different ways that you can make air conditioner more efficient. The condenser and evaporator are vital parts of the system,  but other components in the system, like the air registers and ducts have a huge impact on the efficiency of your air conditioner. This article explains how to clean your air registers and ducts for maximum airflow and better overall efficiency.

Cleaning Your Registers

Cleaning your air registers is simple and doesn't require any special tools. Usually, all you need is a flathead screwdriver to get the registers off of the wall. Once you have removed the register from the wall, you can clean them in the sink with dishwashing soap. If you have metal registers that are rusty or corroded, just replace them completely. Air registers are extremely cheap and easy to install.

Cleaning Your Air Ducts

Cleaning your air ducts is the more difficult part of this job. First of all, you need specialized tools. Most importantly, you need a telescoping pole and a duct cleaning brush. Both of these can be found at a home improvement store. They are cheap and convenient because you will be able to clean your ducts whenever you need to.

The best way to clean your ducts is to attach the duct cleaning brush to the end of your painters pole, and then sweep it out. You want to guide the pole all the way to the back of the duct, as far as it will go, without rubbing against the side walls. Then, pull it out, applying pressure to one of the duct sides. Repeat this until you have swept out every square inch of your ducts.

Be aware of all the dust that spills out as you sweep it to the opening. The most effective solution is to have a hose vacuum nearby, sucking up the dust as you sweep it out. This is easier if you have two people, especially when it comes to clean the ducts that are high on the wall.

It is also a good idea to clean and sterilize your duct walls with antibacterial household cleaner. This is a great way to halt and prevent mold formation within your ducts. Cleaning your air ducts and registers is cheap, but very important work. If you regularly maintained your air ducts, you are guaranteed to have better airflow and cleaner air inside your home.
